Webster's Dictionary defines fetishism as the centering of strong sexual emotion on objects or parts of the body not normally associated with such emotions.  The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders third edition published by the American Psychiatric Association in 1980 defined fetishism as the use of non-living objects (fetishes) as a repeated, preferred, or exclusive method of achieving sexual excitement.  Later editions of the manual no longer list fetishism as a psychosexual disorder.  Humanity is being enlightened.

Now that headshrinkers have gotten out of the business of defining fetish, it is up to the community to define itself.  In a very real way it is something different to everyone with an interest in the scene.  To those who are more curious than committed veterans, it is important to know what it is not.  It is not just about tying people up and whipping them; although, some folks do get tied, gagged, and beaten.  It is not sex with animals or children, these are crimes, not part of the fetish lifestyle.  It is not prostitution.  If you expect to screw your dominatrix after she's gone through a little act with you, you've definitely come to the wrong place.    Although gothic styles are popular and administration of extreme sensations may on occasion be a theme, at no time does the word "torture" take on its commonly accepted meaning.  Everything is done under consent.  Being responsible, caring and attentive enough to stay within your partner's limits is an absolute necessity for anyone, thinking about playing these games.  If there is anything I can say about the fetish community in general, it would be that they are the safest, most health conscious group I've ever seen.

So what is fetishism?  It is a lot of things.  If your mother uses a vibrator on occasion, she's into fetishism and the vibrator is her fetish.  Technically speaking a fetish is an object.  Some common fetishes include blindfolds, cages, chastity belts, Chinese balls, cling film, collar and leash, cross-dressing, diapers, dildors, feathers, handcuffs, high heels, lace.  Latex, leather, scat (shit) soiled underwear, suction devices, vibrators and whips.  A fetish can be any body part other than a reproductive organ.  If you enjoy autoerotic, or masturbation as it's sometime called, you have a hand fetish.  If breast turn you on, you have a breast fetish.  Other body parts which are common fetishes include body hair, hairless bodies, beards, muscles, ears, and feet.  Enjoyment of these parts of  another person's body is sometimes referred to as body worship.

Foot worship is the enjoyment of another person feet.  Enjoyment of the foot fetish may be derived from photographs of feet either bar, in stockings and high heels, or boots.  It can be giving to foot massage or pedicure if this is arousing to you.  Touching, caressing, kissing or licking another person's boots, shoes or bare feet can be very arousing for both people involved.

Amputation fetish is generally not sexual pleasure derived from amputating one's own limbs, rather, it is being turned on by amputees (folks who've already lost a limb).  Amputees can be

very erotic and versatile lovers.

Positions which would otherwise be difficult become easier.  Sometimes the impossible becomes possible.  Dwarves and midgets can also be unusually versatile lovers.

Smoking fetishes being aroused by people smoking.  If you are turn on by women smoking cigars, this is one of your fetishes.  Do you like to see a woman smoking a cigarette on the end of a stylish six-inch cigarette holder?  Does the smoke flowing slowly, seductively, sensuously across her lips, before she inhales seem exotic to you?  Do you find men who smoke pipes attractive?

"Piercing fetishes"

Piercing fetishes include pleasure from having needles stuck into or through parts of the body, pleasure from piercing a willing partner, pleasure from jewelry worn permanent body piercing, or pleasure from being turned on by a partner's body piercing.    Pierced ears are by far the most common body part as far as permanent piercing go.  Other commonly pierce body parts include noses, tongues, nipples, belly buttons, penises and labia.  Some men find a woman's pierced nipples or belly button very arousing.  Touching of gently manipulating jewelry worn in body piercing can be arousing for the wearer or the admirer.  For those who can appreciate  it, a lover's pierced tongue or penis jewelry  can be very stimulating.  Permanent piercing of any thing other then the ear lobes should be done by a licensed professional.  Temporary piercing is usually done with sterile acupuncture needles or sometimes-sterile hypodermic needles.  Sterile is the keyword here.  Needles should never be shared or reused.  Don't try this one on your own.  You can seriously harm yourself by piercing things that are better left un pierced.  Only explore this fetish with a well-experienced partner.

Role-Play

Religious Fetish

Religious fetish is a num or priest play.  It frequently includes wearing of nun's or priest clothing and /or role-play various scenarios that are exciting to the people involved.

Schoolroom discipline is another popular role-playing game.  Role-playing, in general, frequently involves appropriate costumes and scenario, which has been at least roughly agreed upon in advance.   Some other role-playing characters are  KGB interrogator, nurse, doctor, little girl, pregnant lady, bike babe, mother, and of course in some cases dominatrix.
