Webster's Dictionary defines fetishism as the centering of strong sexual emotion on objects or parts of the body not normally associated with such emotions. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders third edition published by the American Psychiatric Association in 1980 defined fetishism as the use of non-living objects (fetishes) as a repeated, preferred, or exclusive method of achieving sexual excitement.
